The South African Kiteboarding Association(SAKA) had its end of season awards ceremony on Friday 22 April at the Big Bay Lifesaving Club, thankfully the event was planned for inside as the heavens opened with huge down pours!
The evening was to acknowledge a very busy and successful season with a number of events and record setting events with the Jerry’s Big Air turning heads worldwide with the number of record setting jumps on the WOO System and then the Guinness World Record set for the “Largest Parade of kitesurfers” at the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada presented by WeChat. The official hand over of the charity funds raised from the Armada were given to SAVE Foundation.
Awards were handed out to the top 3 overall riders in both the Freestyle and Wave Riding disciplines for both the Pros and Amateurs as well as special awards for the most improved and top up and coming riders. It was also an opportunity to thank Price Check, Kenings and the kiteboarding industry for their contribution to the series.
Before the festivities got underway it was a great moment to announce 6 kiters who would be receiving their Western Province colours from South African Sailing. Well done to Luke Mcgillewie, Oscar Armstrong, Aron Rosslee, Jason van der Spuy, Ben Rootman and Simone Swanepoel – the first female kiter to receive colours.
The new season will be kicking off in October 2016 and the 2016/2017 promises to be action packed with even more events planned on the calendar.
